Obama on Iran

Following is an excerpt from an interview with Barack Obama that will appear this weekend in the Yedioth Ahronoth daily newspaper, an Israeli news organization.

You have said you would be ready to talk to "enemy leaders." Some Israelis are skeptical that just by speaking with the leaders of Iran, you could prevent them from producing a nuclear weapon. If diplomacy fails, would you support using force against Iran, as Israel did against Iraq in 1981?

I don't believe that diplomacy alone will stop the Iranians from pursuing nuclear weapons. I believe it will require all facts of our national power to achieve this important goal.

The gravest threat to Israel today comes from Iran, where a radical regime continues to pursue the ability to build a nuclear weapon, and continues its support for terrorism across the region. President Ahmadinejad continues his offensive denials of the Holocaust, and his disturbing denunciations of Israel? Recently he referred to Israel as a "deadly microbe" and a "savage animal." Threats of Israel's destruction cannot be dismissed as rhetoric. The threat from Iran is real, and my goal as president will be to eliminate it.

The time has come to talk directly to the Iranians, and to lay out our clear terms: an end to their pursuit of nuclear weapons; an end to their support of terrorism; and an end to their threats against Israel and other countries in the region. To achieve this goal, I believe that we must be prepared to offer incentives like the prospect of better relations and integration in the international community; as well as disincentives like the prospect of increased sanctions.

What kind of nonsense is this "we must be prepared to offer incentives like the prospect of better relations and integration in the international community"? Does he really think that the Iranians care about that?

We now know that he will not use force against Iran. "[T]he prospect of increased sanctions" does not qualify as force. If they were a viable option we would not be in Iraq today. The only effect sanctions will have on Iran will be to let the whole issue fester until it is too late to deal with it. Iranian President Ahmadinejad is already defying the UN.

The U.N. Security Council has demanded Iran halt uranium enrichment, the part of its nuclear programme that most worries the West because the process can potentially be used to make material for bombs.

Iran has refused to halt the work. It says it is seeking to master nuclear technology so it can make fuel for a planned network of nuclear power plants and save its huge oil and gas reserves for export.

France and Britain have submitted a third sanctions resolution against Iran calling for measures including asset freezes and mandatory travel bans for specific Iranian officials.

Sounds just like the song and dance we went through with Saddam. We all know how well that worked. The UN let resolution after resolution be passed and ignored until WE went in and did something about it. What planet is Obama from that he thinks it will be any different this time.

Obama will be the second coming of Jimmy Carter.

The New Light Bulbs are Already History

I said earlier that it would only be a matter of time before those screwy light bulbs Congress has mandated for us to use are found to be dangerous to our health. It didn't take long. The EPA is now warning that these bulbs are not safe to use anywhere. Just the suggested clean up procedures point to a future lawsuit.

Fluorescent light bulbs contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. EPA recommends the following clean-up and disposal guidelines:

Before Clean-up: Vent the Room

1. Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more.
2. Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one.

Clean-Up Steps for Hard Surfaces

3. Carefully scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
4. Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
5. Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes and place them in the glass jar or plastic bag.
6. Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb on hard surfaces.

Clean-up Steps for Carpeting or Rug

3. Carefully pick up glass fragments and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
4. Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
5. If vacuuming is needed after all visible materials are removed, vacuum the area where the bulb was broken.
6. Remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister), and put the bag or vacuum debris in a sealed plastic bag.

Disposal of Clean-up Materials

7. Immediately place all cleanup materials outside the building in a trash container or outdoor protected area for the next normal trash.
8. Wash your hands after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing clean-up materials.
9. Check with your local or state government about disposal requirements in your specific area. Some states prohibit such trash disposal and require that broken and unbroken mercury-containing bulbs be taken to a local recycling center.

Future Cleaning of Carpeting or Rug: Vent the Room During and After Vacuuming

10. The next several times you vacuum, shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system and open a window prior to vacuuming.
11. Keep the central heating/air conditioning system shut off and the window open for at least 15 minutes after vacuuming is completed.

It will not matter that Congress mandated these things. When the time comes you will be held liable for any pollution from the mercury in your home. Just like the Radon testing nonsense the day will come when you will have to prove zero mercury contamination before you can sell your house. The concerns are great enough that we may get Congress to repeal this stupid mandate before we are all on the hook for a nation wide Super Fund clean up.

Montana, Statehood and the Second Amendment

The Supreme Court of the United States is hearing the case by a citizen of Washington DC which challenges the gun ban in the District. It is the first such challenge to the modern interpretation of that amendment that the right to bare arms is a collective not an individual right. An interesting wrinkle has been uncovered. The state of Montana's statehood charter clearly specifies the Federal Government acknowledge the second amendment as an individual right as a contingent to that territory becoming a state.

Legal commentators question whether a contrary ruling by the court would invalidate the charter but that is what 39 elected officials in Montana have claimed in a resolution they have signed.

"The U.S. would do well to keep its contractual promise to the states that the Second Amendment secures an individual right now as it did upon execution of the statehood contract," Montana Secretary of State Brad Johnson said in a Feb. 15 letter to The Washington Times.

In light of such an agreement the Supreme Court would be hard pressed to now contradict the assurance of the government in 1889 that the individual retains the right to arms.

Larry Norman Dies

Larry Norman was the pioneer of Christian Rock. In 1978 he suffered serious injury in a plane crash that contributed to his early death.

The emergence of Christian Rock caused a stir in religious circles that persists to some extent today. Larry's music was directed toward people who were not Christians in an effort to spread the good news of God's redemption. The religious establishment wanted him to write for them. His reply that he did not wish to bring the gospel to the converted summed up the essence of the controversy.

Somehow the style of music rises above the message. Such inverted priorities are a hallmark of religion as opposed to a relationship with God. There are plenty of traditional gospel songs with words that fall short of the gospel message or the worship of God. There is no reason they should hold a superior rank over a different style that has a more worthy message.

I like many forms of music. I prefer the rock style but the words have to exalt God above all things for me to enjoy it. I must confess that I cannot listen to Christian Rap/Hip Hop. I'm sure the message in much of that is good, I just can't stand listening to it long enough to hear it but that is just me. To dismiss it as Devil's music would commit the same error as those who condemn rock. Larry Norman led the way in combating such attitudes but paid a personal price for having done so. A price I think he gladly accepted.

His final message to all who knew and appreciated him was this.

"I feel like a prize in a box of cracker jacks with God's hand reaching down to pick me up. I have been under medical care for months. My wounds are getting bigger. I have trouble breathing. I am ready to fly home. I won't be here much longer. I can't do anything about it. My heart is too weak. I want to say goodbye to everyone. In the past you have generously supported me with prayer and finance and we will probably still need financial help. My plan is to be buried in a simple pine box with some flowers inside. I'd like to push back the darkness with my bravest effort. There will be funeral information posted on my website, in case some of you want to attend. We are not sure of the date when I will die. Goodbye, farewell, we will meet again."

"Goodbye, farewell, we'll meet again
Somewhere beyond the sky.
I pray that you will stay with God
Goodbye, my friends, goodbye."

My favorite line from his songs is this:

Jesus is the Rock
And He rolled my blues away

I Agree with Hillary Clinton

Well sort of.

The contest between Clinton and Obama has left the skirmish faze and entering the real fighting faze. All the coziness of the most recent debate was show. All talk of Hillary going away quietly is wishful thinking. I must agree with her description of Obama's message.

"Now I could stand up here and say, let's get everybody together, let's get unified the sky will open, the light will come down, celestial choirs will be singing," she said, to a smattering of giggles. "And everyone will know we should do the right thing, and the world will be perfect."

She added: "But I have no illusions about how hard this is going to be. You are not going to wave a magic wand and make the special interests disappear."

The change rhetoric has carried Obama a long way with supporters who have no clue about what that change will be. His calls for getting along in Washington and doing business differently fit Mrs. Clinton's description quiet well. Just saying it will not make it so. Look how quickly the Republican Congress that came in during her husband's administration forgot why they were sent. Obama however is not the only one promising to wave the magic wand to make the world a better place. That analogy sums up the whole of the Democrat platform, Mrs. Clinton included.

Obama and Clinton both have ambitious and expensive vote buying schemes that have yet to be scrutinized for what they are, pure unadulterated socialism. Yet Obama is much better at masking it with rhetoric about a bright future. The only future we will have with these folks regardless of which one wins is a repeat of the Carter era of high taxes, high inflation and high unemployment.

McCain Learns Who His Fiends Aren't

The New York Times dumped a hit piece on Senator McCain accusing him of an improper relationship with a lobbyist. This is what McCain gets for all his Liberal but kissing. I hope he figures it out. All the back stabbing of conservatives he's done in the past has not bought him 1 cent's worth or deference from the liberal press.

Bob Bennett, an attorney for Mr. McCain, told Fox News last night the story was "a smear job."

"All of the matters that they allude to, I mean, they are not even very specific, we answered fully to the New York Times. We showed them that there was just nothing there. And, unfortunately, they have just obviously disregarded all of the hard evidence that we presented," he said

Big surprise.

Michelle Obama Explains her Comments

Michelle Obama finally stops letting other people explain her comments about finally being proud to be an American. I don't see how her explanation fits her previous statement.

"What I was clearly talking about was that I'm proud in how Americans are engaging in the political process," she said.

"For the first time in my lifetime, I'm seeing people rolling up their sleeves in a way that I haven't seen and really trying to figure this out — and that's the source of pride that I was talking about," she added.

How does "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change." Fit that explanation. It is real hard to get around the "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country." Part. I might be a little more charitable about this if it wasn't for the problems Barack has with saluting the flag. For now I will be satisfied with her follow up to the explanation.

When asked if she had always been proud of her country, she replied "absolutely." "Barack and I, our stories wouldn't be possible, if it weren't for fundamental belief and pride in this country and what it stands for."

Still a bit weak. She would have better served herself by acknowledging the great strides America has made over the last decades in making hers and many many other black American's success stories fairly commonplace today.

Delegate Bob Marshall Announcement for US Senate

I can't express my enthusiasm enough for a candidate such as Bob Marshall. I have known him since his first term in the Virginia House of Delegates. He is remarkable in his unwavering commitment to his principles. When I found out tonight that he was seeking the nomination to run for the US Senate I did not hesitate to sign on. Here is a transcript of his announcement:

Today I am announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate. Over the past two and a half months Virginia citizens and Republican Party officials have asked me to consider running because they want someone who will represent their views and values, a candidate who is not afraid to articulate these values and who will stand on principle. What are the banners Virginians want held high?

* Protecting the right to life of all children from conception; and protecting the right to defend one's life;
* Defending "liberty and justice for all"
* Understanding that taxpaying citizens are not bottomless ATM machines for government;
* Empowering states to deal with illegal immigration;
* Keeping the focus of American capital and jobs here at home and not overseas;
* Refusing to sell military technology to foreign nations just to reduce our trade imbalance;
* Attacking the federal debt that puts American citizens at the mercy of foreign bankers and politicians;
* Honoring America's sovereignty by avoiding backdoor executive agreements;
* Empowering parents to direct their children's schooling and health care;
* Ensuring that every person is judged by the content of their character not the color of their skin;
* Recognizing that American and Allied troops have won the war and Iraqis must now win the peace;
* Aggressively achieving energy independence for the United States;
* Increasing private sector jobs, not government bureaucracy;
* Restoring respect for marriage and the traditional family;
* Preserving the gift of our world's natural resources for our posterity;
* Making government procedures transparent and holding leaders accountable to the public;
* Rejecting campaign reforms that favor millionaires over all other citizens.

I know that our rights come from the hand of our Creator, that government derives its just powers from the people expressed through their elected representatives, that the purpose of government is to protect our rights, and that government leaders must be the peoples servants, not their masters.

My desire to protect every human life, to promote individual freedom and responsibility, and to seek the common good are the reason why I entered public service 16 years ago and why I am running today. Experience has shown that the best means to secure our rights and limit government power are the institutions of private property, churches, private charities, and the family, with elected officials answerable and accountable to the public.

If Republican candidates can articulate and fight to restore these ideas, which have drawn so many to participate in the public process, then we will again succeed at the ballot box.

Virginia is the seedbed of the American Experiment, and it can be a field of hope for restoring the American Republic.

The undying example of our nation's Founders, and their unyielding sacrifice, should be our guiding star. Their clear thinking held that rights that proceed, in the words of the Declaration of Independence, from Nature and Nature's God. This creed should thrive in the heart of anyone seeking public service.

And because they thrive in my heart, I ask the voters of Virginia, I ask you to consider making me your choice for the United States Senate. Thank you.

Michelle Obama, Proud American?

Michelle Obama sums up the liberal attatude toward America.

"Hope is making a comeback and, let me tell you, for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change," she said during a rally in downtown Milwaukee.

"I have seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues and it has made me proud," she told supporters.

Nothing in America has impressed her until now. Nothing.

I guess since people are enthusiastic about Obama bringing socialism to America the country really matters now. This is what progressives mean when they say they they are patriotic. They are loyal to a socialist American future, not to the nation we all know and love.

Maybe her husband can salute the flag now.

AP Future News on Primaries

As I write this it is 9:19 am ET. This is significant only when you read the following article published on the internet by the Associated Press.

Democrats Vote in Wisconsin and Hawaii

By NEDRA PICKLER – 44 minutes ago

CHICAGO (AP) — Democrats in Wisconsin and Hawaii had their say Tuesday in a hard-fought presidential campaign that has grown increasingly negative with charges of broken promises, plagiarism and petty partisanship.

Sens. Barack Obama of Illinois and Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York criticized each other as they looked to break out of a tight race, fearing the prospect that neither one will secure the nomination before the convention this summer.

They entered Tuesday's contests closely divided in the hunt for the 2,025 delegates needed for the nomination: 1,281 for Obama and 1,218 for Clinton.

The day's biggest prize was Wisconsin, where 74 delegates were up for grabs and polls showed the two in a statistical dead heat. Neither candidate made the long trip to campaign in Hawaii, where 20 delegates were to be decided by a caucus.

Obama, born in Hawaii and living in Wisconsin's southern neighbor, hoped to build on his string of eight straight wins. Clinton's campaign played down her chances in Wisconsin, but was hoping to beat expectations to give her struggling candidacy new life.

With blue-collar workers in the industrial Midwest up for grabs, both candidates focused their barbs on economic issues. Clinton's campaign sent a mailer to Wisconsin voters saying Obama's health care plan would leave 15 million uninsured, while Obama blamed Clinton's "hollering at Republicans and engaging in petty partisan politics" for the failure of the health care initiative she spearheaded in her husband's administration.

The rest of the article drones on but does not publish the results, yet.

Obama will Save the World

Everyone is calling Obama long on talk and short on ideas. I beg to differ. His website has a long list of ideas. While the details are cloudy the intent is clear. The change he wants to bring to America is plain old socialism. Not surprising but also not the least of our worries. He would place much of our foreign aid into the program coming out of the UN. Called the Global Poverty Act it is a bill sponsored by Obama that would require the President of the US to implement a plan to "cut extreme global poverty in half by 2015 through aid, trade, debt relief."

A statement from Obama's office this week noted the support offered by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"With billions of people living on just dollars a day around the world, global poverty remains one of the greatest challenges and tragedies the international community faces," Obama said. "It must be a priority of American foreign policy to commit to eliminating extreme poverty and ensuring every child has food, shelter, and clean drinking water. As we strive to rebuild America's standing in the world, this important bill will demonstrate our promise and commitment to those in the developing world.

"Our commitment to the global economy must extend beyond trade agreements that are more about increasing profits than about helping workers and small farmers everywhere," he continued.

The bill institutes the United Nations Millennium Summit goals as the benchmarks for U.S. spending.

Not a word about doing anything about the screwy, corrupt and destructive governments that are the cause of most of this poverty. No mention of how much the minions working at the UN have stolen for themselves or channeled it to dictators who put the money to good use in their Swiss bank accounts. The see no evil hear no evil policies of the Carter administration will be back in force. You and I get to pay for it and the world will be worse off for it.

Obama Does not Salute US Flag or Condemn Che Flag

Obama has some trouble with the flag thing. He must think they are just cloth with no meaning attached to them.

He took off his American Flag lapel pin for some problem he had with being patriotic without having to show it. He did not put his hand over his heart while the National Anthem was being sung. He could not bring himself to condemn a volunteer's hanging of a Cuban Flag superimposed with the face Che Guevara anymore forcefully than to say, "The office featured in this video is funded by volunteers of the Barack Obama Campaign and is not an official headquarters for his campaign." I guess Obama is a Socialist so perhaps he doesn't see any problem with his supporter's having reverence for other Socialists even if they are psychotic killers.

Makes me wonder what kind of change he's talking about for America.

The Hillary Offensive

The fight is starting.

Hillary won the Florida and Michigan primaries by being the only name on the ballot in states that the Democrat Party punished for not adhering to its rules by blocking their delegates from the convention. Her surrogates are now pressing for those delegates to be seated.

The rules committee can decide to do just that so the political maneuvering to stack the committee is in full sing. This is typical of an organization that has elevated politics over principle.

Unfortunately for the Party they have maneuvered themselves into a corner that they cannot escape without a fight. If they seat the delegates they risk offending Obama supporters who will rightly claim a dirty trick to benefit Cliton by the establishment within the Party. If they do not seat them they will face the same howls of disenfranchisement they leveled after the 2000 election that "every vote must count." Underlying all this is the racial politics that the Democrat Party has exploited for decades.

The leader of the NAACP, Julian Bond is pressing the seat the delegates. This is more evidence that that organization is nothing more that a wing of the Democrat Party. With a vast majority of Black voters supporting Obama, Bond's argument that not seating the delegate is discriminatory to black people rings hollow. Overlooking the pledges the candidates made to not campaign in those states and giving these delegates to Hillary while she is trailing Obama will cause many Black Democrats to feel betrayed by the Party. Add to this unhappy scenario there is Howard Dean, the head of the Party looking to bring the whole mess to an early conclusion. Hillary is not going away so one can assume he will press Obama to back off.

There is an air of expectation among Democrat voters. The bitter fight looming will deflate that and give us two useless parties with a shattered Democrat Party and a McCain Presidency cementing the liberals in the Republican Party.

Virginia Primary results

It looks like Hillary Clinton is getting beat bad. The only questions at this point are:

Will she cry and lose her voice again?

Will she fire her campaign manager again?

Will the October surprise be moved up to March?

Don't expect her to go away quietly. I expect a full fledged civil war to be launched real soon by the Clinton Stalinist machine before the rats start jumping from the sinking ship.

History of the World (short version)

I do not know who to attribute the following to but I received it via Email from a reader known as "smiling Bob"

For those who slept through World History 101...... here is a condensed version.

Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.

The two most important events in all of history were:

1. The invention of beer, and

2. The invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the beer, and the beer to the man.

These facts formed the foundation of modern civilization and together were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:

1. Liberals

2. Conservatives.

Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.

Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to B B Q at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as the Conservative movement.

Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly BBQ's and doing the sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement.

Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. The rest became known as girlie-men.

Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the invention of group therapy and group hugs, the evolution of the Hollywood actor, and the concept of Democratic voting to decide how to divide all the meat and beer that conservatives provided.

Over the years, Conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth, the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by the jackass.

Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare.

Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of liberal women have higher testosterone levels than their men. Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists are liberals. Liberals invented the designated hitter rule because it wasn't fair to make the pitcher also bat.

Conservatives drink domestic beer. They eat red meat and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, medical doctors, police officers, corporate executives, athletes, Marines, and generally anyone who works productively. Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.

Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to govern the producers and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in Europe when conservatives were coming to America . They crept in after the Wild West was tamed and created a business of trying to get more for nothing.

Here ends today's lesson in world history.......

It should be noted that a liberal may have a momentary urge to angrily respond to the above before forwarding it.

A conservative will simply laugh and be so convinced of the absolute truth of this history that it will be forwarded immediately to other true believers, and to more liberals...just to piss them off.

Voting in Virginia's Primary

Here in Virginia we have an open primary. That simply means every voter chooses which primary to vote in regardless of individual party affiliation. It is one of those stupid ideas that only the inventor of the spork could make sense of. It is this kind of selection process that cripples any effort to craft a party that stands for any set of principles. With liberalism being the lowest common denominator in politics it is the natural destination of any political party that looses the anchor of its principles.

Once more I will be voting in a Democrat primary. While I am best described as a libertarian conservative, I have voted in many more Democrat primaries than Republican. The reason I vote in Democrat rather than Republican primaries is simply to vote for the candidate that I believe will loose more easily or the candidate less likely to do harm to my liberty if the Republicans do not prevail. The later is the case tomorrow. Not that I believe either Republican is much to cheer about.

McCain has done so much damage already that I place him firmly in the liberal camp. His crafting of the campaign finance reform act has to hold first place in elitist demagoguery while making a situation worse for having done something about it. His illegal immigrant amnesty bill is only less so simply because it went down in flames. He claims to be a defender of the second amendment but sponsored the McCain/Lieberman gun show bill that would give the government the ability to close all gun shows and register all attendees. His only positives would be his semi pro life records and he seems to understand the war on terror but he is so untrustworthy when it comes to our rights that I suspect any stand to be one of convenience.

Huckabee makes all the right noise about being a Christian but has pursued some questionable policies while in Arkansas. They include giving instate tuition to illegal immigrants, pressing to end the embargo of Cuba to trade with Castro's government and giving pardons to hundreds of criminals many of whom then went back to a life of crime. He is pro life and supports the second amendment which is the only thing that separates him from the rest. He has made some concessions toward more conservative tax and immigration positions but only time will tell if he actually gets it.

The only thing that separates Clinton from Obama is the Clinton Stalinist machine that has been in place since Bill and Hillary were last in the White House. Both Obama and Clinton have supported unrestricted abortion, disarming citizens, socialized medicine and a fairy tail foreign policy. Obama's lack of an instituted and dedicated group of supporters in the government makes him much less of a danger to our freedom than his opponent Hillary Clinton. That being said he has my vote tomorrow.

The Second Coming of Jimmy Carter

I just can't shake the feeling that we are headed for a repeat of the Carter era. All the candidates on both sides are prone to inventing stupid government spending policies to solve problems that government can only make worse by addressing. Romney less that the others but he is not immune. Just recall his speeches in Michigan about how he would revive the domestic auto industry there. What, is he going to dissolve the unions and bring in Toyota? I don't have to go over the rest of the dim wits. With all their bluster there is no difference between the Democrats. Socialism will be the order of the day. McCain might not like pork spending but his swallowing global warming hook line and sinker will make up for any savings he might get Congress to cough up if any.

For those of you too young to remember, the Carter era was ushered in with much fanfare and expectation. After the whole Nixon Watergate nonsense it seemed a grinning, good old boy, born again Christian from Georgia would bring the change we all wanted in Washington. President Ford was nothing to brag about. His "Whip Inflation Now" effort produced nothing. Inflation stayed right at 4% a year.

Carter brought change all right. He jacked the social security taxes while covering them with a modest income tax break that was coupled with the now familiar income tax credit which gives tax returns to people who didn't pay taxes. He fought pork barrel spending but added two cabinet level agencies, the Dept. of Education and the EPA. When the economy slipped into recession he faced an energy crisis which he addressed with rationing and conservation. The result was lines at gas stations and escalating prices. All this followed by the Iranian hostage crisis which he tackled with...diplomacy. It only lasted a year and a half, or more accurately, to the day after he left office. The inflation rate was 15% while unemployment was 8%. Take any of the candidates and some or all of this will be a reality again. Seems Americans need to remind themselves every generation that Government is at best a necessary evil and at worst an intolerable one.
